Digital Detox

Woman in meditation pose practicing breathwork for stress relief and wellness in a cozy living room setting, promoting mindful living and mental health.

When was the last time you stepped away from your phone and laptop for more than a few hours?

If you have followed me for any length of time, you know I am all about creating a mindset of abundance especially when it comes to how we eat!

I won't be advocating for any dietary detoxes anytime soon...

But digital detoxes on the other hand...

YES, please.

The reality is a digital detox is hard in our modern ultra-connected world-- our brains love the little dopamine hits we get each and every time we refresh our inboxes or see a new social media notification.

So how did I do it?

I went back to the principles from James Cleary's Atomic Habits.

The best ways to break a bad habit are to make it:
invisible, unattractive, hard, and unsatisfying.

We just got back from a much-needed family vacation- taking our first-ever cruise. Part of the appeal was knowing that I would have an opportunity to really disconnect for a few days.

So what did it take for me to disconnect for a few days?
Having to pay $12/day for really slow internet access was both unattractive and unsatisfying.

We left the girls' tablets at home and focused on reconnecting with our imaginations and each other.

Of course, this wasn't without some discomfort and whining.
"I'm bored"

But here is the thing, boredom is good for our brains!
It increases our ability to be creative and problem-solve.

As a result, I read a few books and figured out workarounds to circumstances I had been noodling on for the last few weeks!

But now, back to reality this week. We were welcomed back from warm sunshine with snowflakes...

I am back in the office seeing patients for peak spring pollen season, visiting Good Day Columbus Tuesday morning, and the team and I are gearing up for the 2nd Annual Virtual Sjogren's Summit that will take place on April 1st and 2nd!
